Ezekiel Stone, played masterfully by Peter Horton, was a New York City police detective. He was happily married and was good at his job. Then, one night while he was on duty, someone broke into his home and raped his wife. In a rage, Detective Stone sought out the rapist and murdered him. Shortly thereafter, Stone was killed in the line of duty. He was sent to Hell for his sins.
Fifteen years later, 113 damned souls escaped their eternal torment. Satan himself, portrayed wonderfully by John Glover, made a deal with Stone. If Stone would hunt down all 113 fugitives and return them to Hell, Satan would free Stone and allow him to return to his life.
Episode Format
Each week Satan would appear to Detective Stone to provide him with a lead on the next fugitive from Hell. Ezekiel would then begin his hunt for that fugitive using all the skills and abilities he had developed in life as a police officer. Along the way, Stone would often seek out memories of his life, such as craving a Reggie Bar.
On one occasion he even sought out his widow for the chance to see her one more time. By the end of the episode, our hero would corner the fugitive and fire two bullets into the escapee's eyes sending them back to Hell. For as Satan had previously told him, "The eyes Detective Stone, windows to the soul. Destroy the eyes and the damned get a one way trip back to Hell."
